The faces of Greece

Here are a couple of videos I caught yesterday on the BBC website showing two faces of Greece, two contrasting views of how the country can emerge from the economic crisis. The first video on new Greek entrepreneurs wants to be optimistic about Greece and its potential but, without wanting to suggest that Greece embrace wholesale the Anglo-Saxon fetish for ‘business’, ‘private enterprise’ and so on, I doubt whether the country is ready for those ethics and practices that would enable innovative start ups and small businesses to flourish. Indeed, this study suggests that, out of 183 countries, Greece is 109th in an ‘ease of doing business’ league, just below Bangladesh and Ethiopia. The sentiments expressed by the protester in the second video still hold sway in Greek society.
